iPad 6th Gen Cases Understanding the benefits, similarities and differences of charging solutions for K-12 school technology.

On March 2018, Apple launched the new version of their 9.7-inch iPad (6th generation) which is targeted to the K-12 market. At first glance, you won’t notice much of a difference between the iPad 6th generation and the 5th generation version that was launched last year. Examining the iPad specs, you can see the additional features the iPad 6th Gen has to offer.

The iPad 5th Gen and 6th Gen models both have the same accelerometer, three-axis gyroscope, ambient light sensor, digital compass and barometer as well as the same support for dual band 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO and Bluetooth 4.2. The iPad 6th Gen offers the same battery life as the 5th Gen which is 9 to 10 hours –  9 hours for cellular-capable models on mobile networks and 10 hours of battery life on Wi-Fi.

The iPad 6th Gen is the first iPad non-Pro that supports the Apple Pencil. The 6th Gen also upgraded in terms of processor. It’s powered with Apple A10 Fusion which boost the 6th Gen performance. It also supports more LTE options. It has Retina display with a 2048-by-1536-pixel resolution at 264 ppi, 9.7-inch (diagonal) LED-backlit Multi-Touch display with IPS technology, and a Fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating. Now that the 6th gen supports the Apple Pencil, more educators prefer it to the iPad Pro since it’s more budget friendly.

Since the iPad 6th Gen has the same appearance as the 5th Gen, the common mistake made by educators is to use the same case they use for the 5th Gen. They overlook the fact that the 6th needs a different screen protector since it’s Apple Pencil supported and needs more sensitive and protective screen protection. Brenthaven offers cases specially designed for the 6th Gen screen to allow for higher screen calibration when using the Apple Pencil. Beyond the screen functionality, Brenthaven cases offer complete, 360-degree protection for the iPad 9.7” 6th Gen. Brenthaven cases are designed with Crumple Zone™ Corners that absorb and deflect impact, exceeding military standard MIL-STD-810G.

Brenthaven offers 3 different case styles, from a folio to a portable carry case, which caters to the needs of all students. Best of all, Brenthaven stands behind their cases with a 100% Lifetime Guarantee.

The Importance of Battery Life for K-12 Tech Deployments Understanding the benefits, similarities and differences of charging solutions for K-12 school technology.

The Importance of Battery Life for K-12 Tech Deployments

Battery life for any device is a vital part of a student’s success in the classroom. Nowadays with technology playing such a prominent role in the K-12 education systems, having a dead battery can become a disruption and hassle during class. Without quality battery life, the benefits reaped by this essential learning tool will not be able to serve its valuable purpose for students.

Tablets, Chromebooks, and iPads can hold hundreds of digital files and textbooks, increase interaction and creativity, create a collaborative environment, support game and project-based learning and save a lot of money in the long run. Technology in education is everywhere and this “digital conversation” in schools will only grow year after year. This year alone, state standardized tests for the elementary and middle grades are being administered via technology than by paper and pencil for the first time. That is why it is essential to select the right charging solutions whether that is power bricks or charging carts.

Benefits of charging carts:

·Compatible with different devices (iPad models, chromebook, tablets, etc.)

·Syncing option

·Simultaneous charging

·Ability to lock and protect devices

·Safe and smart charger alternative

·Turns off automatically

·Eliminates time consuming wiring

The drawbacks of this charging solution is the higher cost and the larger size compared to bricks. The convenience factor should also be taken into consideration; students who are responsible and can keep track of their individual brick may prefer that method of battery charging opposed to leaving their electronics in the carts overnight or for long periods of time.

Benefits of power bricks:

·Heat reduction

·Reduced size and weight

·Easy replacement

·Versatility & Portability

·Students & teachers can take home

Some drawbacks associated with the brick include common misplacement when making students responsible for bringing it to and from school. Compression of the brick against the laptop or iPad may create the risk of damaging the screen while stored in a students backpack.

Currently, schools are using both specially designed charging carts and power bricks to provide students with the ability to power up their devices at their easiest convenience. With these resources, they can be ready to participate in whatever activity is required of the device at a moments notice. Powering means productivity.

IT Advantages of Chromebook Deployments Read the roundup of IT Advantages of Using Chromebooks in the classroom.

IT Advantages of Chromebook Deployments

Chromebooks have taken off as a primary form of classroom technology. It is estimated that Google Chromebooks make up half of US classroom devices sold. This is even more impressive when you consider that Chromebooks made up less than 1% of devices sold to K-12 classrooms in 2012. The speedy growth that Chromebook has been able to accomplish is nothing short of incredible, and is due, in part, to their IT infrastructure that is optimized for the K-12 environment. We’ve listed just some of the advantages of IT for Chromebook:

Chrome OS

Chrome OS is sometimes criticized for not being as robust as Mac or Windows OS. However, Chromebook has cornered the EDU market by making its OS ideal for use by students. It’s fast and easy to use without the extra or unneeded “weight” of more involved operating systems. Chrome OS is designed to run the Chrome browser more efficiently than anything else. It is also optimized to run Google’s suite of applications for the classroom. From a school’s perspective, the simplicity and optimization of Chrome OS for the classroom is a huge advantage of Chromebooks.

Chromebooks are optimized to run Google’s applications such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. Though a criticism of Chromebooks is that they don’t run more advanced software, such as Adobe Suite, Chromebook has many alternative cloud-based applications that can run similar functions for free. Not only that, but the cloud-based apps are ideal for sharing and collaborating on work, a vital function for K-12 classrooms. Google Drive allows students to open, edit, and share documents and spreadsheets with ease. If you can name a common software, Google likely has an app that performs a similar function and can be accessed and edited by numerous user in the cloud.

Offline Use

Though Chromebooks rely heavily on an Internet connection, there are more than 200 offline Chrome apps that work without Internet connectivity, so students still have the set-up to access Google Drive, Gmail, and more even when a Wi-Fi connection is not available.

All Chromebooks come with at least 16GB of onboard storage. Since the Chromebook is set up to run via cloud-computing and the use of online applications, this is more than likely more storage than will ever be needed on the device. Google provides 100GB of free Google Drive storage, and additional storage plans can also be purchased. This alleviates the burden on schools’ IT professionals of managing storage and memory on individual devices.

Rising popularity of Chromebooks in K-12 1:1 Deployments Learn more about why Chromebooks are rising in popularity for 1:1 technology deployments.

Chromebooks have revolutionized the way technology is used in classroom environments. During the 2015-2016 school year, it is estimated that one-sixth of students and teachers will receive a new computer, and one half of those deployed computers will be a Chromebook. Furthermore, the Education sector accounted for 85% of Chromebook sales in 2013. There are several reasons that Chromebooks have been taking off as a primary K-12 classroom technology, including:

Low Price Point

Competition among the various Chromebook manufacturers has driven down the price of devices. In 2015, the percent of Chromebooks sold for under $300 crossed the 50% mark. Devices costing less than $200 are beginning to edge their way in as well, with Asus and Acer models coming in at sub $200 price points.

Cloud Based Software

Making a Chromebook competitive is more than just a matter of hardware and price point. In order to be competitive, Chromebook manufacturers are constantly innovating and improving their device’s cloud-based architecture to provide genuine advantages to users.

Need for Online Assessment

K-12 Chromebooks are a secure platform for administering student assessments. Chromebooks meet K-12 education standards for these assessments and have the capability for educators to disable students’ access to the web during certain times and control other features such as screenshots and printing.

Though Chromebooks are an ideal technology for the K-12 environment, we at Brenthaven have learned that Chromebooks are fragile and highly prone to damage. Brenthaven has been designing and building protective cases for K-12 settings since long before Chromebooks existed, and we know what it takes to provide best-in-class device protection.
